Visually, the external appearance is exceptional, and particularly internally,is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it's 40+ year-old age.It really is a remarkable and exceptional, exemplary example for it's brightnesss, cleanliness and lack of any other or age-acquired detracting faults usually encountered in a book of this age. On 1 December 1975,Henry Williamson - author of the great nature classic,'Tarka the Otter',and of two remarkable sagas ('The Flax of Dream' and 'A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight') which gained the highest critical acclaim - celebrated his eightieth birthday. In normal circumstances such an anniversary would have merited public recognition, even a public honour: Williamson received none.
No English writer of his status has been so ignored. Why? The answer is simple: in the 1930's,he was a supporter of Sir Oswald Mosley and in a foreword of one of his books, had re-iterated his praise for him.In the public's mind he was branded a Fascist and an admirer of Adolf Hitler; and he has never been forgiven. In this personal memoir, author and journalist Daniel Farson, who new Willaimson from childhood, looks at the man and the myth. Daniel Farson was a friend and neighbour of Williamson for a quarter of a century,Drawing on his own memories and those of a wide range of Williamson's distinguished contemporaries and friends,Farson looks beyond the prejudice and controversy surrounding this lonely genius in a moving and sensitive portrayal of one of the greatest English writers of that century. Daniel James Negley Farson (8th January,1927 – 27th November,1997) was a British writer and broadcaster, strongly identified with the early days of commercial television in the UK,when he worked for Associated-Rediffusion,the first British commercial television company,in the mid-1950s.Here he took risks that few television interviewers of the day would or could; his sharp, investigative style contrasted with the conservative BBC's more deferential culture of the time.
While living at his father's old house in North Devon Farson established a close friendship with Henry Williamson,an Agrarian Right ally of James Wentworth Day,and later he paid tribute to Williamson with this book, published in 1982,five years after Williamson's death. 'Sacred Monsters' (1988) is a collection of essays on artists and writers Farson had known.
